How to Lead Up: Turning to God Instead of Ourselves
In leadership, we often talk about the importance of "leading up." It’s a concept that usually means influencing those above us, like our bosses or mentors, in a positive and impactful way. But what if leading up has a deeper, spiritual dimension? What if it’s less about influencing others and more about leaning on God?
The truth is, "leading up" really means "leaning up"—trusting in God over our own plans, strategies, skills, and resources. It’s about acknowledging that while our knowledge and best practices have their place, they are nothing compared to the wisdom and provision of our Creator. He is where our help comes from.
“I lift up my eyes to the hills. From where does my help come? My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth.” ~ Psalm 121:1-2
The Danger of Relying on Our Resources
The Old Testament offers a powerful warning for those who put their trust in human resources instead of God. In Isaiah 31:1-3, the prophet declares:
"Woe to those who go down to Egypt for help and rely on horses, who trust in chariots because they are many and in horsemen because they are very strong, but do not look to the Holy One of Israel or consult the Lord! And yet he is wise and brings disaster; he does not call back his words but will arise against the house of the evildoers and against the helpers of those who work iniquity. The Egyptians are man, and not God, and their horses are flesh, and not spirit. When the Lord stretches out his hand, the helper will stumble, and he who is helped will fall, and they will all perish together."
This passage highlights the futility of relying on earthly power, strength, or resources. The Israelites sought help from Egypt, a powerful and resource-rich nation, but they failed to seek God’s guidance. How often do we fall into the same trap? We rely on our skills, strategies, or even the latest self-help books, forgetting that true wisdom and strength come from God alone.
Leaning on God in Challenges and Troubles
Instead of looking to our own understanding or worldly solutions, the Bible calls us to lean on God. Here are some key verses to help us remember where our strength and guidance come from:
Psalm 46:1: “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.”
When challenges arise, God is our safe place and our source of strength. He is always near, ready to help us in our time of need.
Psalm 55:22: “Cast your burden on the Lord, and he will sustain you; he will never permit the righteous to be moved.”
We are invited to give our burdens to God. He promises to sustain us, ensuring we remain steadfast and secure in His care.
Proverbs 3:5-6: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.”
Trusting God requires letting go of our reliance on human reasoning. When we acknowledge Him in every area of our lives, He provides clarity and direction.
Isaiah 41:10: “Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”
God’s presence and power are constant. He promises to strengthen, help, and uphold us, no matter the difficulty.
Philippians 4:6-7: “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
Prayer is the ultimate way to "lead up" and "lean up." When we bring our anxieties and needs to God with a heart of gratitude, He provides peace that transcends our circumstances.
A Call to Action
If you find yourself in a season of challenges, ask yourself: Are you relying on your own strength, or are you leaning on God? Leading up begins with surrendering your plans, trusting in His provision, and walking in obedience to His Word.
Let’s commit to leading up by leaning up, trusting that God’s wisdom and strength are far greater than anything we could ever achieve on our own.
Know Better. Do Better. Live Better. Lean Up!
