Money Talks!

We are a society where money talks. Meaning, if you have money people are more likely to listen to and follow you. And we like that kind of power that comes with having money.

But when money talks...it's really "telling all" about the heart behind it. So what is your money saying about your heart?

Most of us work for money, but sadly not because we’re super passionate about our jobs. We need and want money to buy things.

Throughout most of history, money was used to buy what people NEED: food, clothing, shelter, and the like. Because most of society was poor.

Oh sure we still buy those things, but now money is used to buy what people WANT: technology, fashionable looks, things to impress others, and if you have a kid in any kind of program…lots and lots of t-shirts for those programs.

We have become a society where debt is not bad…because after it all it builds up your credit score, right?

Speaking of debt, that reminds me of a commercial from the early 2000s.

“I’m in debt up to my eyeballs.” “Somebody help me.”

These words ring so true for so many people today.

But personal finance is just that…personal!

So I’m not going to push any hidden agenda here. But as you work, live, and spend, I encourage you to seek out what the bible says about money.

Below are some verses to get you started in reflecting on the biblical view of money.

Check your heart in love, service, and contentment

Luke 12:34 “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” NIV

Matthew 6:24 No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.NIV

1 Timothy 6:10 -  “For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils. It is through this craving that some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pangs.” ESV [emphasis mine]

Hebrews 13:5 “Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.” [emphasis mine]

Check your heart for stinginess or giving

2 Corinthians 9:7 “Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.” NIV

Proverbs 28:22 “The stingy are eager to get rich and are unaware that poverty awaits them.” NIV

Proverbs 22:9The generous will themselves be blessed, for they share their food with the poor.” NIV

Count your cost before going into debt

Luke 14:28 “Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. Won’t you first sit down and estimate the cost to see if you have enough money to complete it?” NIV

Proverbs 22:7  "The rich rules over the poor, and the borrower is the slave of the lender." ESV

Romans 13:8 “Let no debt remain outstanding, except the continuing debt to love one another, for whoever loves others has fulfilled the law.” NIV

Now, I encourage you to pray and ask God for wisdom and insight for stewarding what He has blessed you with.

Know Better. Do Better. Live Better. Be a Good Steward of Your Money!
